When signage exists but users still lose orientation, the issue is rarely solved by adding more signs. The problem often lies in broken information routes, inconsistent destination naming, missing confirmations, late decisions or signs that no longer match how the space is used. The Recovery Program combines onsite survey, spatial scanning, existing signage mapping and continuity analysis modeled in WayDrafter through agent-based simulation and our Brief Studio AI engine to identify where the current system breaks down — and translate the findings into a practical wayfinding optimisation design.

When signage exists, but the wayfinding does not work.

Signs accumulate in layers. The route stops forming.

In many operational buildings, the signage system has been built in layers: original signs, later updates, temporary additions, tenant changes, rebranding, event signage, digital screens, printed notices and local fixes.

Each element may make sense on its own. But together, they often stop forming a clear route. A visitor receives a direction at the entrance, but not at the next decision point. A destination appears under different names. Signs are added over time, but never reconnected into one system. The building changes, the user flow changes — and the wayfinding system slowly loses its logic.

Our team works onsite to document the current signage, user decision points, spatial conditions and information flow. We combine field observation, spatial scanning, location markers and our internal Brief Studio analytical workflow to understand not only where signs are located, but what decisions they support — or fail to support.

The process allows us to identify where the user receives information, where that information disappears, where it becomes inconsistent, and where the space needs a corrective intervention.

The output is not just an audit report. The output is a practical wayfinding optimisation design.

Onsite spatial survey

We inspect the building as users experience it: entrances, lobbies, decision points, vertical circulation, corridors, destinations, exits, parking connections and service touchpoints.

Existing signage mapping

Existing signs are documented, photographed, classified and assigned to their spatial context. Location markers may be used to connect physical signage with its digital record and support structured field capture.

Agent-based movement & detection simulation

The collected information feeds WayDrafter’s agent-based simulation module. We model how a first-time visitor moves through the existing structure and detect where the route holds — and where it quietly fails: whether destinations stay consistent, whether decisions are supported at the right moments, and where the system breaks down. The simulation is supported by our Brief Studio AI engine.

Optimisations and design solutions are then stress-tested through agent-based analysis before they become a design — challenged, not just drawn. Simulation and AI support the work; the final interpretation and recommendations stay with our wayfinding team.

The failures that make users lose orientation.

Named, located and prioritized — not just observed.

  1. Missing information. Users reach a decision point without enough information to choose the correct route.
  2. Broken route continuity. Routes that start correctly, but lose confirmation before the user reaches the destination.
  3. Inconsistent naming. The same destination appearing under different names across signs, maps, screens or directories.
  4. Late decisions. Signs that appear too late — after the user has already had to choose a direction.
  5. Weak confirmation. Users may be on the correct route, but the system does not reassure them that they are still going the right way.
  6. Signage clutter. Too many messages competing in one place, reducing clarity instead of improving it.
  7. Invisible or misplaced signs. Signs that exist, but are not positioned in relation to natural movement, sightlines or decision points.
  8. Spatial contradiction. The sign says one thing, but the architecture, lighting, furniture, crowd movement or layout suggests another.
